How to install VLC on Windows 98

The new versions of VLC do not work on Windows 98. In order to use VLC, Video Lan Client, the powerful and lightweigh video player even on Windows 98 natively, it is necessary to get the latest version compatible for our operating system.
The last version of VLC directly compatible with Windows 98 is 0.8.6i.

During the installation the message “Error while loading DLL ‘unicows.dll'” appears indicating that it is necessary to install “Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95, 98, and Me Systems”, though unicows .exe file, downloadable from here or here

The path in which the extracted files are to be placed must be C:\Windows\System

After installing Microsoft Layer for Unicode, VLC is working fine on Windows 98.
